My Favorite Modalities of Therapeutic Massage - and why they work.
Massage is a powerhouse tool when it comes to soothing the human body. A simple light touch can soothe anxiety and settle nerves while deep tissue and more focused work can release hyperactive muscle fibers and reset neuromuscular spasms that pinch and cause pain all over. The beauty of a massage session is that you, the client, can experience a tailored session that addresses your specific needs. Your massage therapist should check with you before your session to find out your activity level, past or current injuries, and the areas you would like to focus on during your massage. When it comes to choosing the right modality for you there is plenty of benefit to trying out several types of massage to see which option offers you the greatest benefit.
Swedish Massage
In a Swedish session your therapist combines smooth and gliding strokes to increase blood flow through the body. This boost to the circulatory system hydrates and warms the musculature with nutrient dense, oxygenated blood leading to healthier tissue. Swedish sessions can be relaxing or invigorating with great benefits to emotional well being either way.

Deep Tissue
Deep Tissue massage is similar to Swedish massage with both styles utilizing oils or lotions and gliding strokes to boost circulation and promote relaxation to the recipient. Deep Tissue massage adds more focused work and deeper friction to more actively break up adhesions (knots) in the muscle fibers as well as releasing sticky fascia from underlying tissues, leading to the great result of relieved tension and more comfort overall.

Lymphatic Massage
A Maddison Lee Wellness favorite offering! Lymphatic massage boosts the flow of lymphatic fluid throughout your body. The beating of the heart creates the movement system for the oxygenated and nutrient dense blood to flow in the body while the lymphatic system relies on movement of the joints to deliver lymphocytes (immune boosting white blood cells) as well as to aid in clearing cell debris and various toxins being stored in the body. This style of massage helps move the recipient into a parasympathetic nervous state which is the “rest and digest” counterpart to the commonly known “fight or flight” state we can find ourselves stuck in due to daily responsibilities and stressors. Choose lymphatic massage to boost relaxation, increase well-being, and for a gentle touch massage that will leave you in a deep state of peaceful serenity.
Ashiatsu
Maddison Lee Wellness offers an Eastern fusion massage which combines Shiatsu, meaning finger pressure in Japanese, and Ashiatsu which is referred to as barefoot massage. In an Eastern session the client rests on a mat on the ground fully clothed while the massage therapist walks barefoot on their body to therapeutically apply pressure to tense or sore muscles. These Eastern sessions provide great relief to the clients who need plenty of pressure for stubborn, chronic pain.
Assisted Stretching
In an Assisted Stretching session the client and the stretch therapist work together to move the client’s body through the full range of motion of the major muscles groups. In these sessions the therapist and client communicate throughout each stretch checking in for pressure and intensity of stretch. Maddison Lee believes stretching should be a painless experience and uses knowledge of corrective exercise studies to provide the greatest benefits of stretching without creating an overly intense experience. These sessions are great for all bodies regardless of one’s current flexibility, and also work as a great substitute for massage for individuals who don’t enjoy traditional massage yet still want to enjoy the benefits of increased blood flow and overall well being that bodywork can provide.
